Even successful central banks sometimes have to fight political pressure during crises. That is the situation the SNB has recently got into. It is getting harder for the bank to repel politicians’ attacks as the threat of the bank losing its independence is constantly growing. After the SNB suffered huge losses as the result of numerous currency interventions, the country’s rightist forces urged the Swiss authorities to exercise control over the bank’s activity. At the same time Switzerland’s left-wing forces and industrial lobbies offered to peg the Swiss Franc to the common European currency in order to help the Swiss exporters, who keep suffering from a strong national currency.
